Stolen Fly Fishing Reels!
On a night in May 2010 there was a series of burglaries to properties in the Moretonhampstead
area of Dartmoor, Devon.
In one of the burglaries a quantity of Fly Fishing equipment was stolen including 3 Hardy
Perfect Reels and 2 Stan Bogdan Reels, 1x 4’’ and 1x 3.5’’. It is estimated there are less than a hundred Bogdan
reels in the country.
Look out for these being offered for sale on eBay or elsewhere and if you see them, you are
asked please to contact Devon and Cornwall Police 08452 777444 Quoting JC/10/435.
Let's hope we can get the victim of this burglary his fishing tackle back!
Still dreaming of the one that got away? You may be using the wrong reel!
The 3 types of Fly Fishing Reels and what they can do for you!
There are many anglers who feel that fly fishing is as much an art form as it is a skill. To be
successful one needs extreme patience, perseverance and the commitment to truly master their techniques. However,
by using the wrong fly fishing reels, even the most relaxed and focused angler can become frustrated and head for
shore.
Here are the three main types of fly fishing reels and the advantages and disadvantages of
each;
Single Action Fly Reel
When it comes to fly fishing reels there is definitely something to be said for reliability and
durability. This is the main reason why single action fly reels are the most common. The term single action refers
to the 1:1 retrieve ratio, put simply, one turn of the reel equals one turn of the spool. Many fly fishermen will
also choose single action fly fishing reels for their simplicity. These reels are not complex and consist of only
the bare minimum when it comes to parts. Replacing spools, cleaning and maneuverability is all extremely easy when
using a single action reel. For those who are new to fly fishing and want to learn the skill without having to
worry about their reel, this is an ideal choice.
Multiplying Fly Reels
Contrary to single action fly reels, multiplying reels offer a retrieve ratio of greater than
1:1. Achieving a higher ratio and providing an angler a fast retrieval means more parts, and unfortunately more
mishaps. However, due to the fact that these reels are extremely quick when bringing in a line, many experienced
fly fishermen prefer them over their single action counterparts. Though these types of fly fishing reels can be
more difficult to handle, their speed makes them a great choice when fishing for larger more aggressive fish. When
fighting with the big one bringing in excess line could make the difference between a trophy sized catch or a
boatload of disappointment.
Automatic Fly Reels
There are many situations in life where the idea of “automatic” implies convenience and
efficiency. However, fly fishing is not one of them. Although automatic fly fishing reels are available they are
not popular and are considered by many serious anglers to be more trouble then they are worth. Unlike single and
multiple fly reels, automatic reels retrieve the line using a trigger system and the angler has no control over
retrieval speed. They also consist of many small parts and are not as durable as other reels. Even essential
maintenance such as changing spools is a long and frustrating process.
